 | | | | | | Environmental Science | | Welcome to environmental science! This is designed to be an introductory course that will get you thinking about our world and the impact we as humans have on it. To do this, we need to gain an understanding of the world itself, which includes topics from the biological, physical, and earth sciences. This class will also provide you with some of the necessary skills to be successful in any class. These skills include observing, investigating, interpreting, hypothesizing, questioning, and concluding. Library materials (books, magazines, newspapers, CD-ROM, Internet) and multimedia tools will enhance many of the concepts covered this year.
This course will incorporate lab work for discovery, cooperative learning and group activities, and varieties of assessment. Safety is always a concern, and you will not be allowed to participate if you are putting yourself or others in danger.
Necessary everyday materials: Textbook: Environmental Science, Holt Spiral notebook Pen and pencil 2-pocket folder, or binder Arlington Planner
Classroom expectations: 3 R’s: Respect for Self, Respect for Others, Responsibility for Actions • Be prepared for class! Do your homework, turn it in, ask questions, have all necessary materials. • Be on time! Promptness is a sign of respect and is expected. • One person speaks at a time—either you or somebody else. • Language is appropriate and mature. • Keep your hands, feet, and belongings to yourself! • Respect the equipment in the lab, including desks, scientific equipment, and other building supplies. It’s ours to use and enjoy, but not destroy. • Make sure your area and/or equipment is clean and put away when you leave the classroom. • Take responsibility for your own learning and actions. You are in control of your behavior. • Cell phones are out of sight, meaning in your locker. There is no reason to have them in class—they are nothing but a distraction for you and others.
Grading policy: A= 90-100% B=80-89% C= 70-79% D=60-69 % NC= 59% and below
*** Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated under any circumstances and will result in a zero for that assignment. Other action may be taken at the discretion of Mrs. Lowther and school administrators.***
Absences/Late Work: • A due date for an assignment is just that! Late work will not be accepted. • If you know you are going to be gone for any reason, please talk to me before you leave in order to get the necessary work! That makes my job and your job a lot easier. • Missing assignments will appear on the computer grade sheet as zeros. • Quizzes will be made up within one day of an absence—before or after school. • Tests will be made up within three days of an absence—before or after school. • Labs will be made up within one week of an absence on days designated by Mrs. Lowther. **Warning! Being absent for any one of these important activities typically results in more work for you. I strongly encourage you to be in class!
I hope to make this year fun and challenging at the same time! Science can be enjoyable, believe it or not. I am always available for questions and additional help. Please let me know if you have any concerns. Let’s have a great year!
