AP Chemistry Syllabus AP Chemistry Course Syllabus Mary Hanson St. Paul Public Schools—Arlington High School 1495 Rice Street-St. Paul, MN-55117 651-293-6900 Grade Level: 10-12 Course Title: AP Chemistry Course Length: One Year Prerequisite: Successful completion of General Chemistry with a C or better Text Books: Holt Chemistry-Visualizing Matter, 1996 ISBN 0-03-000193-5 Cliffs AP Chemistry, 3rd Edition, 2001 ISBN 0-7645-8648-x Grade Determination: Tests/Quizzes=40% Laboratories=30% Homework=10% Final Exam=20% Course Description: AP Chemistry is designed to be the equivalent of the general chemistry course usually taken during the first college year. AP Chemistry is designed to be taken only after the successful completion of a first course in high school chemistry, with a grade earned of C or better. The recommended mathematics prerequisite is the successful completion of a second year algebra course. This course contributes to the development of the students’ abilities to think clearly and to express their ideas, orally and in writing, with clarity and logic. The course will also prepare them to pass the AP Chemistry Exam given in the Spring by the College Board. Course Goals: 1. First Year College Chemistry Topics will be mastered 2. Students will become independent thinkers 3. Students will become critical thinkers capable of analyzing and solving problems 4. All Laboratory experiments require formal lab write-ups including all seven steps of the scientific method with qualitative and quantitative data clearly distinguished. Primary Laboratories are from the Flinn Scientific AP Chemistry collection 5. Students will be prepared to perform successfully on the AP Chemistry Examination given by the College Board
